Finally, I argue that the author employs the narrative device of “prototypical distortion” to lampoon the characters’ deviance. Therefore, I point to the maladaptive psychological traits that the characters exhibit and to how these are projected into the character’ language, forming thus idiosincratic linguistic patterns. Călinescu’s 1938 novel Enigma Otiliei (Otilia’s Riddle) and, in the wake of several literary critics’ shared view that the novel’s characters are individuals driven by much more complex internal mechanisms than simply being based on a single social schema, I suggest that this complexity can be accounted for by the tools provided by psychopathology. Abstract: Drawing on theoretical developments from cognitive sciences and the literary field, more specifically on concepts such as mind style, literary categorization, and prototypical distortion, in the present article, I set out to explore the relationship between literary characters and psychological deviance. ![]() ![]() A complete departure from the Superpowereds universe, Forging Hephaestus focuses almost entirely on the wonderfully twisting and plotting Super Villains you didn't know were hiding in plain sight. ![]() If you enjoyed Drew's other works such as SuperPowereds and Corpies, you'll LOVE this new series.įorging Hephaestus is a darker path than I've seen in Drew's books, and I loved it from start to finish. The Four Books of Architecture offers a compendium of Palladio's art and of the ancient Roman structures that inspired him. But of even greater consequence was his remarkable magnum opus, `I Quattro Libri dell'Architettura` translated into every major Western European language in the two centuries following its publication in 1570, it has been one of the most influential books in the history of architecture. The wide spread of Palladianism was due partly to the private and public buildings he constructed in Italy, the designs of which were copied throughout Europe. ![]() Andrea Palladio (1508–1580) was one of the most celebrated architects of the Renaissance, so important that the term Palladian has been applied to a particular style of architecture that adheres to classical concepts. ![]() ![]() ![]() Reed has become a police officer, and silently keeps tabs on all of the people who survived that night. Years pass, and the survivors of the shooting are still putting their lives back together. ![]() He sees a laughing teenage boy firing shot after shot into innocent bystanders, and he calls 911 as he, and the toddler he’s saved, hide in the sunglasses kiosk – near Angie’s lifeless body. Reed is rushing to get back to work on time when he hears the shots, then the screaming. Reed is using his break time to chat up Angie, the cute girl working a sunglasses kiosk, and make plans with his best friend, who works at the nearby GameStop. ![]() She calls 911 – she’ll always be remembered as being the first to call – and hides in the bathroom while the two shooters continue their killing spree. She assumes it’s the soundtrack of the movie she’s missing, until she nears the theater door and a wild-eyed, bloody man falls in front of her. On a typical Friday night Simone is coming out of the mall’s movie theater restroom when she hears the gunshots. ![]() wow, this mesmerising addictive fantastic book, has got to absolutely be the BEST ONE yet. A bit of angst along the way, but not as harrowing as some Shen novels. Of course the story works through in the end and they get their happy ever after. Hunter who pops into this book is his usual irreverent self and the banter between the men is entertaining, although I find the female friendships a bit irritating, perhaps because I’m not a fan of Emmabelle. The whole story arc is intriguing, as we find out the reason behind Cillian’s lack of feeling and behaviour. Persi is also funny, she has sass and doesn’t put up with his BS. No doubt Cillian is cruel, but his lack of social filter means he says many of the things we would probably be thinking but not dare say. The story is intriguing, full of humour, frustrating and heartbreaking. Love Ava’s portrayal of BDSM Barbie though. Dodgy British accent for Dev (touch of the Dick Van Dyk from Jacob there, but at least he didn’t just go for the cut glass British accent which is often the case). ![]() ![]() They both capture the meaning in the words well with their portrayal. ![]() The narration by Jacob Morgan (one of my favourites) and Ava Erickson is wonderful and adds to the story (over the kindle which I have also read). Having listened to all the Boston Belle series this one is my favourite. ![]() ![]() ![]() This however is probably the only time where I have actually read the whole (online) magazine in which this story was published. ![]() ![]() Maybe at long last they've realized this themselves. Frankly, I never understood why it is preferable to have a skewed rating system, and messed up (not properly searchable) shelves, by virtue of forcing people to shelve and rate online magazines, when in fact the vast majority of those people reads (and rates) just one of the freely available stories. However, Goodreads and short stories - this has always been a match made in hell. It shouldn't be something worth mentioning. The first one being that there is a discrete entry for this story now. But my original review is in some other place. ![]() ![]() ![]() However there’s no imp making deals to help Miryem, she must save herself. The rumours of Miryem’s skill reach the Staryk kingdom, and they come to see if what is said is true.Ī man who’d marry me like this wasn’t marrying me at all he was making a bargain for a girl-shaped lump of clay he meant to use at his convenience, and he wouldn’t need to value me high when my father made it so clear he didn’t.Īs with the original fairytale, things are done in threes and the power of names is important to the Staryk. ![]() The Staryk lust for gold and are known to kill anyone who takes what is theirs the white animals in the forest, the colourless trees. In the cold of winter, the glow of the Staryk Road can be seen close to their village. When she takes matters into her own hands, the business prospers and rumour spreads of the girl who can change silver into gold. Miryem is the moneylender’s daughter, her father being far too nice for the profession. It completely passed me by that Naomi Novik’s Uprooted was based on Beauty and the Beast, but Spinning Silver is clearly inspired by Rumpelstiltskin, yet also so much more. ![]() |
